How To Create Change in Your Life: Identifying Your Homeostasis

If you are ready to create change in your life then this is an extremely effective technique that I’ve been using for more than 30 years. It’s important for you to create awareness of what patterns have been in your life to date and decide if you want them to stay or to go.


Identifying your Homeostasis

Let me explain the concept of homeostasis. Homeostasis receives its origin from biology. For example, an animal always gravitates back to its natural environment. The frog will always find water at some point.


The technical definition is “the tendency of a system, especially the physiological system of higher animals, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function.”


I phrase this concept in a way that is much easier to understand in relation to your life. Homeostasis is the feeling that you knew best from childhood. It is the one you will eventually gravitate back to. You will do this by subconsciously attracting the same people and/or circumstances in your life to recreate this same feeling you had growing up.


This can be a scary thought to many people!


When I am first working with a client I ask them, “What is the feeling you knew best growing up?” After much thought, I usually get an answer such as “feeling alone, stressed, tired, different, isolated, fearful, anxious or angry.” The answers are vast and varied! Then I explain what homeostasis is and we look at what the feeling they know best is RIGHT NOW in their life. I haven’t done a specific study on this yet but I would say that about 95 percent of the time it is the SAME feeling! Isn’t that incredible?


That can be one of the most pivotal moments of awareness for clients in the beginning stage to welcome change into their life. Until you have awareness of what you are attracting on another level, you can’t change it.


Let me give you an example. One of my clients identified her homeostasis as feeling isolated and picked on throughout her childhood. This was due to many reasons such as sexual abuse, health problems and other things, but what she didn’t realize was how she had attracted this same feeling to her life right now. Even though she has a loving husband and children, she purposely avoided talking about intimate thoughts and feelings with her husband. The resulting feeling was that she felt isolated within the marriage. When she looked at her friendships, she realized her friends were very and critical in nature, and she felt picked on. Until we identified this, she didn’t have the knowledge to do something different.


What is the feeling you know best from childhood? Is it repeating itself in your life in some fashion? Have you attracted or behave similarly as when you grew up?
